Message: Divine Backing in Business
(Text - John Chapter 21, verses 3 to 11)
Beloved of God, as a business man or woman, you need to realize that a successful business is a business that is founded on God and on His principles.
God is the best of business persons, and this statement is true in all cases.
The Gospel according to Saint John, Chapter 21 verses 1 to 11 reveals a most amazing truth about business success. It tells of an account where seven of the twelve disciples of The Lord Jesus Christ went on fishing. It will interest you to note that the disciple that led that team of seven was Peter, the one The Lord had said He will establish His church on.
What could have made Peter, the best of fishermen of his time lead a team of seven – made up of himself and six other great fishermen returned unsuccessful in the business they learnt and practiced almost all their lives? What could have made the seven disciples unsuccessful in this fishing business even after having been with Jesus for over three years learning success principles from The Lord Himself? Someone is saying “Oh, The Lord Jesus Christ had told them to be fishers of men and not fishers of fish”. Really, could that have been the reason they failed? Let’s look closely!
Beloved, God wants to give you a backing in the business that you are doing. You will realize that you perhaps have assembled the best of teams a workforce should have as was the case of Peter (Seven out of the twelve disciples of Jesus to make a team and go on a business trip, one would not have thought of failure of any kind). Perhaps you have put in much financial resources by way of goods, equipment, or in advertising, but with little or no success to show. Then, The Lord Jesus might be drawing your attention to something: that is, you need divine backing.
Why is it important to have divine backing in business?
For quite a number of reasons, but we will address just two of those reasons here.
1. To avoid misplacing priorities: It is evident in John 21 verse 3 that although Peter and his team members fished all night, they did not have a caught. Was it that they did not have the right tools for fishing or what? And if we say, misplacement of priorities, what do we mean? Where they supposed to do something else at that night? And if that was the case, what is it that they were to do?
The life of Jesus as seen in several passages in The Bible clearly reveals that He was always in the habit of praying all night, and that was what He taught the disciples, and so for them to have gone fishing at night was not the right thing to do at the time. Naturally, you will notice that the night is usually the best time to fish. This brings to mind the fact that even when everything has been done humanly right, success cannot happen without divine backing.
It is also clear that their inability to have a caught after toiling for all night was not because they did not have the right tools for fishing as it was the same tools they used when The Lord Jesus encountered them and gave breakthrough (John 21 verses 6).

Divine backing in Business (continues here)
2. Another reason it is important to have divine backing in ones business is that, it enables the business person to know and also take the best of decisions – decisions that are bound to make success happen. This was the case when The Lord Jesus encountered Peter and his team members and said “Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find”. What a glorious way to be led in business! Knowing the right steps to take at every point all the way, this way, no fruitless toiling all night. No depression or failure. What a glorious thing to have – divine backing in ones business.
Beloved, may be you are finding yourself in a similar position that Peter and his team mates found themselves. May be you are asking yourself “What did I do wrong?” I want you to realize that there is something you can do so that the tide can turn in your favour.
In the case of Peter and his mates, there was no account of their calling unto God for divine direction, they merely counted on their expertise, experience, and the like. If not for the intervention of Jesus, they would have been hungry that day along with all their family members. But what did The Lord Jesus teach His disciples? The Gospel according to Saint Matthew Chapter 7 verses 7 to 8 reveals the importance of asking from God. This act, when done in faith and absolute believe in God gives direction on what action one needs to take in any case, in all cases. The Prophet Jeremiah in prophecy and uttering God’s word said “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
So, have you done everything humanly possible and your business does not have success yet? Then call unto God for direction and you will be glad you did.
